Abstract

Abstract 677,753. Reversing-gearing. FAHLAND, J. VON. July 4, 1950 [Oct. 1, 1948], No. 16659/50. Class 80 (ii). In marine reversing-gearing wherein a friction clutch 5 is interposed between the engine shaft 50 and the input shaft 4 of the gearing and the latter is controlled by a double dog clutch member 14 splined on the shaft 4, the ends 29, Fig. 3, of the dogs are inclined to facilitate engagement, the edges 31 are bevelled to prevent engagement when speed differences are excessive, and the flanks 42 are slightly undercut to oppose disengagement. The dog member 14 is actuated by a hand lever 15 through oppositely-acting springs, and the friction clutch 5, engaged by springs 3, is disengaged through levers 11 operated through a ball bearing collar 10 by a bell crank lever 6 actuated by longitudinallyadjustable cams 25 on the lever 15, so that the clutch 5 is disengaged prior to disengagement of the dog member 14. The fork part 6, Fig. 4, of the lever 6, engaging the non-rotating part 8 of the collar 10, is swivelled on a longitudinal pin 40 on the main part. A flanged bush 35 splined on the shaft. 4 within the collar 10 carries a friction facing 4' coacting with the part 8, whereby the shaft 4 is braked on disengagement of the friction clutch, engagement of which may be assisted by centrifugal weights.
