Improvements in or relating to apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of fluids
Abstract
Abstract 613,478. Fluid flowmeters. POSTLETHWAITE, F. May 28, 1946, No. 16176. [Class 69 (i)] In a flowmeter of the orifice plate type, the plate 10 is held in the path of fluid flow by a pliable diaphragm 11 that prevents rotation or movement transverse to, but not parallel to, the fluid flow. Axial movement of the plate is restrained by tensioned grids of resistance wire 12, 13, one or two of which are secured to either one or both sides of the plate and the casing and form arms of a bridge circuit so that movement of the plate and consequent variation of strain on the grids upsets the balance of the bridge, causing an indication to be given on a calibrated ammeter. In a modified form the diaphragm is of springy material and the resistance grids are replaced by inductance coils, each surrounded by a, soft-iron magnetic circuit which is completed by soft-iron pieces on the orifice plate, movement of which causes variations in the air gap of the circuit.
