Improvements in and relating to extrusion apparatus particularly for applying sheathing to electric cables
Abstract
Abstract 535,311. Extrusion moulding-machines. SHAW & SONS (SALFORD), Ltd., J., and CLARKE, T. T. Oct. 17, 1939, No. 28046. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Extrusion apparatus for applying a number of continuous sheathings of lead alloys, synthetic resins, or other thermo-plastic material to a long core, e.g. an electric cable, comprises co-axial nozzles 45 in a head 41 through which the core is fed, a number of independent means for feeding the plastic material to the nozzles combined in a single unit attachable to said head and means for controlling the temperature of the extruded material. The core may be fed through a sleeve 5 and bore 53 in the head and the plastic material through passages 50 to the three successively larger nozzles 45, 45' and 47 by screws 9 driven by gears 23, 24, enclosed in an oil bath 28, from a hollow shaft 25. The screws are surrounded by jackets 6a, 6b supplied with fluid the temperature of which may be subject to thermo-static control. The nozzle 47 may be heated externally by an electric heater 66. Each of the nozzles may apply the same material or a plurality of different materials may be applied and the separate feed and temperature control means may be independently adjustable to suit the diverse materials fed. In a modification the material is fed by a plunger press. The means for controlling the temperature of the material may comprise a tube coiled about the feeding means or electric heating elements may be used.
