Improvements in or relating to a method of and apparatus for protecting electrical apparatus
Abstract
Abstract 528,895. Protective arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 16, 1939, No. 14650. Convention date, May 21, 1938. [Class 38 (iv)] A method of extinguishing an arc 27 between stationary electrodes immersed in a fluid dielectric consists in confining the dielectric so that gases produced by chemical change are not permitted initially to expand and the high pressure co-operates in their extinction. A protective device for immersion in fluid dielectric in a transformer or other container may comprise a tube 10 of vulcanized fibre, for example, carrying an electrode 12, having a shield 17, and a screwed brush is carrying a second electrode 26 secured to a conductor. Annular plates 33 comprising grooves 34 may be disposed in the tube 10. The dielectric is permitted to escape through an opening in the electrode 12 or through a tubular conductor 32. In a modification two discs of insulating material are separated by one electrode at the centre and held together by members projecting at the edge of a metal disc underlying these and forming companion electrodes.
