Nitrogenous synthetic resins
Abstract
Abstract Nitrogenous condensation products are prepared by reacting formaldehyde, a substance reacting like formaldehyde or a reactive methylol compound with acrylic acid amide before, during or after polymerization thereof and, if desired, subjecting the resulting product to a heat treatment. Formaldehyde equivalents include hexamethylenetetramine, methylolurea, acrylic acid methylolamide, and p-cresol dicarbinol. The action of the formaldehyde is preferably effected at a hydrogen ion concentration of pH from 7 to 10, caustic soda, barium hydroxide, soda, magnesium carbonate, amines or organic bases being added to control the pH. The reaction may also be effected on mixtures of the acrylic acid amide with bodies capable of interpolymerization therewith followed by interpolymerization; on preformed interpolymers; or the product may be interpolymerized with bodies, such bodies forming interpolymers, including vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, acrylic esters, vinyl chloride and styrene. Bodies capable of reaction with formaldehyde, and their preformed condensates with formaldehyde, such as phenol, aniline, urea or cyanamide, may be added during the course of the reaction. The products may be used for the manufacture of coatings, films, adhesives, impregnants, sizes, and as binding agents such as in the manufacture of brake bodies, clutch discs or abrasive discs. In an example, acrylic acid is condensed with aqueous formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda and the product, after being polymerized in the presence of potassium persulphate, is used to manufacture films which are rendered water insoluble by hot pressing. Specification 467,492 is referred to.
