Abstract

Abstract Porous metal bodies applicable as catalysts are made by moulding powdered metal compounds, preferably oxides, and preferably such as have been highly heated, in admixture with an absorbent material such as charcoal and plasticizing additions such as oils, fats, fatty acids, polyvalent alcohols, inorganic solutions such as of alkalies or water glass, or tar distillates, with or without adsorbents such as metal hydroxides, or gas-liberating substances such as ammonium bicarbonate; the mixture is sintered and the metal compounds reduced to metal. The reduction is effected either by the plasticizing additions or by the use of carbon monoxide or hydrogen in the furnace chamber. Compounds of a single metal may be used, or mixtures of compounds may be treated to produce porous alloys; and substances such as carbon or silicon, whose presence is required in the pores of the product, may be present in the mixture treated.ALSO:Porous metal bodies applicable as filters are made by moulding powdered metal compounds, preferably oxides, and preferably such as have been highly heated, in admixture with an absorbent material such as charcoal and plasticizing additions such as oils, fats, fatty acids, polyvalent alcohols, inorganic solutions such as of alkalies or water glass, or tar distillates, with or without adsorbents such as metal hydroxides, or gas-liberating substances such as ammonium bicarbonate; the mixture is sintered and the metal compounds reduced to metal.
