Improvements in or relating to automatic traffic control systems
Abstract
Abstract 436,883. Railway signalling systems. AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Strowger Works, Liverpool, and RENSHAW, A. P. B., Brookwood, Dickerage Road, Kingston Hill, Surrey. April 20, 1934, No. 11969. [Class 105] [See also Group XXXVIII] A signal is given if the flow of traffic into a controlled section of railway greatly exceeds the flow out of the section. The signal may prevent further flow into the section. As shown in the drawing, cam contacts C2 and C4 are normally closed and each vehicle passing over the " IN " detector, which may be of the type disclosed in Specification 360,924, [Group XXXVIII], operates relay E so that contact e1 allows a charge to pass to condenser QA. The connection from e1 to resistance XA is such that a predetermined number of pulses, for example 40, is required to charge QA to the striking voltage of lamp FA. Each vehicle passing the " OUT " detector operates relay L and allows part of the charge on QA to escape. If the inflow exceeds the outflow to a large extent QA becomes fully charged, lamp FA strikes and relay A operates so that magnet S turns the cam-shaft to open contacts C2 and C4 and close contacts C1, C3 and C5. Contact C5 closes the signal circuit, which may be such as to prevent flow into the section, and contact C3 enables the charging of QA to be controlled by relay L. When the flow moves out of the section, the condenser QA again charges and magnet S steps the shaft to restore the apparatus to its original condition. To ensure return of the apparatus to normal after a current failure, or the like, a slow-to-operate relay may be provided in the mains circuit. This relay would be normally energized and would open contacts in a circuit of the magnet S including cam contacts closed when the cam-shaft is in the blocking position. If current failed with the shaft in this position, when the current is restored the magnet S would be operated, during the slow operating period of the relay, to restore the shaft to normal. The contacts of the relays E and L may be arranged to be closed for a predetermined time no matter how long the detector circuits are closed.
