Abstract

Abstract 394,310. Gas-purifying materials. KOPPERS CO. OF DELAWARE, Koppers Building, Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Jacobson, D. L. and Shively, W. L.; Koppers Building, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) Sept. 19, 1931, No. 26294. Convention date. Sept. 19, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 55 (ii).] Gum-forming constituents such as indene, styrene, or coumarone, are removed from fuel gases by treating them with solvents such as heavy oils to absorb these substances, which are polymerized, and may be removed from the solvents, which may be used again for treating under gas. The solvent is treated with a polymerizing agent such as sulphuric acid, or sulphur chloride, or with oxygen, or hydrogen under pressure, and the polymerized impurities are precipitated, and may be removed from the washing oil. The fuel gas enters a scrubber 3 by a pipe 2, and is sprayed with a heavy oil through nozzles 27, and may then pass through a superposed scrubber 4 in which it meets with fresh oil from nozzles 22 to remove any remaining impurities, the purified gas escaping through outlet 13. Impure oil from the sump 29 is forced by a pump 23 through pipe 34 and nozzles 35 into a chamber 36 in which it is treated with sulphuric acid from pipe 38, the liquid being agitated by stirrers 41. Acid and polymerized gums are withdrawn through pipe 43. The oil is then treated in a neutralizing vessel 50 with caustic soda from a pipe 54, and sludge and salts are drawn off through an inlet 56, the purified oil being recirculated by a pump 25 through pipe 59 and 26 leading to the scrubber. If a solid polymerizing agent such as aluminium chloride is used, the oil from the scrubbers is delivered by a pipe 61, Fig. 2, to a vessel 64 in which it is treated with the solid introduced from a hopper 67. The oil mixture is passed to a pressure vessel 71 heated by a coiled pipe 73, and is then discharged into a tank 81, and fed to a filter press 86 from which the pure oil is led off through a pipe 87 and returned to the scrubber. The contaminated oil may be hydrogenated by introducing a catalyst through the hopper 67, and hydrogen through inlets 90, excess hydrogen escaping through pipe 92. The resin-forming constituents may instead be oxidized by supplying oxygen through pipes 90. In a modification, the gum-forming compounds may be removed from the oil by treatment with gas which is re-circulated through an acid bath, or a heater and chamber containing a catalyst.
