Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of artificial textile fibres
Abstract
Abstract 299,291. Sever, W., and Speakman, J. B. April 3, 1928. Divided on 300,221. Grant of Patent revoked. Apparatus for making filaments.-Artificial textile fibres having wave or curl similar to that of natural fibres such as wool or cotton are made by spinning a fluid medium of any suitable kind into a liquid or gaseous coagulating medium while causing pulsations in the flow of the spinning medium and/or of the coagulating medium. The pulsations may be regular or irregular and may be set up by a plunger or diaphragm pump associated with the spinneret and/or the spinning tube. For example, as shown in Fig. 1, a spring- supported plunger 2 actuated by a cam 3 may be arranged in a flexible conduit 4 leading from a positive solution pump 1 to a spinneret. If the emission from the spinneret is in line with the flow of the coagulating medium, fibres such as are shown in Fig. 2, a, b, are produced, such fibres being capable of felting, but if the flow of the coagulating medium is not in line with the emission from the spinneret, fibres having both a varying diameter and a sinuous or spiral form, as shown in Fig. 3, will result. Specification 300,221 is referred to.
