Improvements relating to oxygen cutting machines
Abstract
Abstract 299,166. Hancock, L. J. Sept. 28, 1927. Perjorating and dividing by fusion.-In a blowpipe apparatus for cutting metals, the tracer or propelling wheel is geared to an air or like motor driven by the cutting oxygen in passing to the burner orifice. Mixed oxygen and gas for preheating purposes pass from the mixing chamber 3 to the burner 5 by way of the tube 4. Cutting oxygen passes through a pipe 6 containing a shutoff valve 7, and before reaching the burner passes through a port 11 in a gas-tight cylinder 10 containing a multi-bladed wheel 9, which is thereby rotated. The shaft of the wheel is connected by spur gear 13, 14 and worm gear 15, 16 to a shaft 17 contained in a tube 24 forming part of the cover-plate 22 and furnished with a gland 25. A worm 18 on the shaft 17 rotates a worm wheel on the shaft of the tracer wheel 21, which is mounted in a carrier 28 having a shank 27 which is vertically movable in brackets 26 on the tube 24. Part of the cutting oxygen may be byepassed by a valve 30 through a port 34 so as to regulate the speed of the tracer, or a brake may be used for this purpose. The apparatus may be guided mechanically or by a handle 35 or may be mounted on machines such as described in Specifications 243,816 and 298.885, or machines in which the tracer is mounted on one arm of a carrier and the burner on the other end. In the last case, the oxygen, after passing through the cutting valve, is led by two tubes running round the arm through the motor cylinder and thence to the cutting oxygen jet. According to the Provisional Specification, the tracer wheel is mounted in a forked carrier fixed to a tube adapted to be turned freely in bearings and pressed by a spring against the drawing. The tube carries the guiding handle.
