Improvements in machines for glazing and drying photographic prints and the like
Abstract
Abstract 271,237. Fry, E. B., and Fry, N. B. May 5, 1926. Drying materials in long lengths.-A machine for drying, by squeegeeing wet prints &c. upon ferrotype or glass glazing plates comprises a resilient roller 3, e.g. of rubber, mounted in bearings in a framework comprising side plates 4 cross-braced by rods 11, which is adapted to be reciprocated by hand over a stationary bed-plate 2 supporting the glazing plate, and which carries projections, such as rollers 5, supporting the arms of a lever frame 6 whereby the roller 3 may be manually pressed upon the glazing plate. In the form shown, the lever frame 6 is pivoted at 7 to stationary brackets 8, and the pressure is applied by a pedal 10 connected by chains 9 to the free end of the lever frame. For removing water from the roller 3, a roller 12 covered with absorbent material may be mounted in open slot bearings 13 in the side plates 4 so as to rest on and rotate with the roller 3. The absorbent material preferably comprises a length of fabric which is wound several times round the roller, and is looped at its ends to receive slats adapted to be engaged with the ends of a wire clip 15 supported on the axis of the roller. To prevent the slats from reaching the squeegee roller 3 during working, the size of the roller 12 is such that it makes less than a revolution for each stroke of the roller frame 4, 11. Stops on the drying roller may be provided as an additional precaution. Deformation of the roller 3 when the apparatus is idle is avoided by lifting the drying roller 12 out of its bearings, and by moving the framework 4, 11 towards the pivot 7 until the roller 3 rides off the end of the bed-plates. In this position the levers 6 rest on brackets 17, and the framework is supported by the engagement of projections on the plates 4 with the levers 6. Removable stop pins 18 in holes 20 in the levers 6 prevent the roller from riding off the bed plate when the machine is in use. The bed-plate 2 is made of wood or metal having a waterproof cover, as of zinc, and has channels at its sides for draining the water into a removable or drainable tank beneath it. A modified machine is referred to comprising a stationary squeegee roller and a reciprocating bed-plate.
