Abstract

Abstract 253,233. Brown, C. A. March 21, 1925. Radiators; aircraft; cooling liquids, tubular apparatus for.-A temperature regulator for the lubricating system of an internal-combustion engine or the like, for example on aircraft, comprises a cooler and a bypass for the cooler or some other part of the system, the bypass being controlled by a loaded valve which is operated directly by, or the operation of which is modified by, the pressure of oil in some part of the system other than the cooler or the bypass. As shown in Fig. 4, a cooler 5 is fed with hot oil from an engine 3 by a pump 4 and delivers the cooled oil to a tank 1 from which the engine is supplied by a pump 2. A bypass 7 in the cooler is provided at either end with a valve 8, Fig. 14, controlling ports 17 in the bypass. The loading of the spring 10 of the valve is controlled by a spring-pressed piston 11 slidable in a cylinder 12 and subjected, through a pipe 13, to the oil pressure at a point 14 between the pump 2 and the engine. The spring 10 may be emitted, the valve 8 and the piston 11 being rigidly conrected. The valve is opened by the pressure in the cooler to bypass the latter when the resistance to flow in the cooler reaches a predetermined degree, and the heat of the oil in the bypass is communicated to the oil in the cooler so as gradually to restore the flow through the latter. Alternatively, the valve may be controlled solely by the pressure at the point 14, by the pressures at the point 14 and in the bypass 7, or by the pressure at the point 14 and the pressure drop across the cooler. An auxiliary bypass 18 is arranged outside the cooler and is controlled by a valve 19, Fig. 16, operated by a piston 22 slidable in a cylinder 23 and subjected to the pressure at the point 14. As shown, the pipe 18 is arranged to bypass the cooler and a part' of the tank 1. When the bypass 18 is used, the bypass 7 may be controlled solely by the pressure in the cooler. Cooling or heating passages or electric heaters arranged in any part of the system may be controlled by valves or switches operated by the pressure or temperature of the oil in any part of the' system, such as by rods 11<1>, 25 projecting from the pistons 11, 22. As shown in Fig. 6, a cooler 5, around which is arranged the bypass 18, is automatically swung out of or into an air stream by the rod 25, or by means controlled bv the temperature of the oil in any part of the system. In the form shown in Fig. 9, a piston 32, slidable in a cylinder 33 and subjected to the pressure at the point 14, has a rod 34 actuating a cock 35. Normally, the cock allows the engine cooling water to pass from the engine to radiator 36, whence it is returned to the engine by a pump 37. When the cock is turned bv the rod 34, however, the whole or a part of the heated water from the engine passes into a pipe 38 which leads through the cooler 5, and, if desired, through the tank 1, and is returned to the engine by the pump 37 without passing through the radiator 36. The rod 34 also projects through the other end of the cylinder to actuate a shutter 30 for controlling the flow of an air stream on to the cooler, and carries two piston valves 39, 40 controlling a pipe IS which bypasses a part of the tank 1. Alternatively, the shutter 30 may be operated by hand- Specification 232,309 is referred to.
