Improvements in and relating to Metallic Packings for Piston Rods and the like.
Abstract
Abstract 26,418. United Kingdom Self-adjusting Anti-Friction Metallic Packing Syndicate, and Sharp, R. G. Dec. 7. Stuffing-boxes.-Locomotive and other stuffing- boxes are cooled by the circulation of water or air through casings surrounding the packing. When water is used, the circulation is effected by convection or otherwise, while air .circulation is effected by steam jets or by a connexion to the brake apparatus or to a supply of compressed air. Fig. 1 shows a metallic packing enclosed in a hollow casing A having an inlet opening a<1> and an outlet opening a<2>. Fig. 4 shows the cooling-spaces in the piston-rod and valve-rod stuffing-boxes of a locomotive cooled by the circulation of water from a tank H. Water passes from the tank by gravitation through a pipe Q to a box P, from which it passes by pipes 0 to the stuffing-boxes. The heated water rises through pipes R to a box S, from which it returns to the tank H by a pipe T. Water is supplied to the tank H by a pipe J containing a check valve, and steam escapes from the tank by a pipe V.
