Improvements in and in connection with junction boxes for connecting electric conductors
Abstract
Abstract 190,824. Scholes, G. H., and Claremont, E. A. Oct. 3, 1921. Boxes and cases; handles.-The danger of explosion in switch boxes is minimized by filling, as far as is practicable, the otherwise vacant space within the box with solid members, some of which may be plastic and some rigid or all of which are plastic. These members may be formed on or attached to the box or the lid and preferably the plastic members have resilience. The arrangement is such that the lids acts to force the plastic material into the spaces within the box and the plastic members may be flanged so as to be gripped between the lid and the edge of the box walls. Suificient space is left to enable the working parts to operate. A suitable material for the plastic members is composed of rubber 50 parts, vulcanized bitumen 10 parts, gutta percha 15 parts, vegetable pitch 10 parts and resin, wax and oil 5 parts each. The figure shows in section a switch box with plastic and resilient members h, i, the latter having flanges i<1> and an opening i<2>, i<4> to accommodate the switchoperating parts which consist of a fork k<2> engaging an arm g<4> on the switch lever and a handle k<1> which is adapted to turn the shaft k which carries the fork k<2> and is screwed so as to minimize the creepage of moisture through the hole where it enters the casing.
