Improvements in or relating to parachutes
Abstract
Abstract 176,406. Democratis, J. B. Sept. 7, 1920. Parachutes.-To render gradual the opening of a parachute released from an aircraft, the rigging tapes are folded into tubes or pockets carried by the rigging or slings and are withdrawn from the pockets during the expansion of the parachute against frictional resistance; and a hoop for ensuring the opening may be secured to the pockets or frictionally held in a bight in each tape. The tapes B, Fig. 8, converge towards the load cord K, and are folded into three lengths at each pocket C. There may be more than one pocket for each tape. Fig. 11 shows three pockets secured together at a portion cw of the tape B; the tape is first folded at e and inserted in the pocket d, then at e<1> and inserted in the pocket d<1>, and finally at e<11> and inserted in the pocket d<11>. The friction may increase as the tape is withdrawn from the pockets successively. The hoop E for ensuring the opening of the parachute may be secured to the pockets at z, Fig. 8; or it may be held in a bight of the tape which is folded at r, Fig. 16, and inserted in the pocket i. The invention may be used with parachutes packed as described in Specifications 172,670 and 175,308. The packed parachute is placed in a container G, Fig. 1, the flaps J of which are held closed by a cord adapted to be passed through eyelets g and to be broken by the pull on the load rope.
