Evacuator for draining body cavities
Abstract
Abstract 1323375 Cavity drainage devices D T CAPOTE 6 Oct 1971 46552/71 Heading A5R An evacuator for insertion through a body membrane, e.g. the eardrum, to drain fluid from a body cavity, comprises a hollow elongate body 10, Fig. 1, having a flange 16 at end of said body to prevent over insertion into the membrane and a tapered generally conical portion at the opposite end of said body terminating in a penetrating point 10' with a reduced diameter portion 15 connecting the generally conical portion and the flange. The body 10 has an axial bore 17 extending from the end adjacent the flange and terminating in openings 17' on the surface of the generally conical portion. An instrument for inserting the evacuator comprises a sleeve 21 in which is slidably mounted on rod 19, Fig. 3, the inner end of the rod having a reduced diameter portion 18 which frictionally engages the bore 17 of the evacuator. The outer end of the rod 19 is connected to the outer end of the sleeve by a spring 23, which urges the rod axially outward and keeps the flange 16 of the evacuator abutted against the inner end of the sleeve. For insertion into the eardrum a funnel-type guide 24 may be provided. The generally conical portion of the body may have on its surface a plurality of cutting edges 11.
