Joint Manual and Power Control for Aeroplanes.
Abstract
Abstract 130,213. Wallace, W. Sept. 27, 1918. Steering and balancing.-A joint manual and power control for aeroplanes comprises an hydraulic relay for operating the control surfaces which is controlled through a lost-motion device on the usual control gear. Means for cutting out the relay are provided. Fig. 1 shows the device applied to a rudder control. Loosely mounted upon the same spindle A<2> as the rudder-bar A' is a lever B<1> forked at one end to take the end of a lever A<3> keyed to the spindle A<2>. Springe C<2> normally hold the lever A<3> in mid-position between stops C<1> on the lever B<1>. Rods A<4>, C<3> connect the levers A<3>, B<1> to opposite ends of a lever B which is centrally pivoted to a valve spindle D<1>. Pipes D<2>, D<3> connect the inlet and exhaust sides of the valve to the delivery and return pipes D<4>, D<5> of a vaxiable-delivery pump worked by an airscrew or from the engine, a bypass E<4> enabling the pump to be short-circuited when the hydraulic relay is not required. The valve delivers pressure fluid to one or other of two single-acting cylinders F<1>, the pistons of which are connected bv cables F<4> to the rudder and by cables F<3> to the lever B'. The initial movement of the rudder-bar causes relative movement between the levers A<3>, B<1>, and the spindle D is actuated. The action of the cylinders F<1> causes the lever B<1> to follow up the lever A<3>, and the spindle D is restored to its mid-position. Fig. 6 shows a modified lost-motion device, a cylinder G being carried by the lever B<1>, and a pin G<1> carried by the lever A<3>. The pin G<1> passes through a slot G<2> in the cylinder G and engages a block G<3> spaced centrally in the cylinder by springs G<4>. Similar devices are described foroperating the elevators and ailerons.
