Improvements in Differential Gears.
Abstract
Abstract 123,783. Logue, C. H., and Ormsby, D. D. Nov. 26, 1917 Differential gearing.-In an epicyclic differential gear for motor-vehicles, the teeth of the bevel wheels and the planet pinions are helical and the spindles of the planet pinions run at each end in conical bearings which act as brake surfaces to retard the differential movement if one road wheel tends to slip on a greasy surface. The helical teeth of the pinions 8 introduce a wedging action thrusting the pinions radially outwards against the conical bearings 12 if a wheel slips during forward driving, or against the inner bearings 11 with reverse driving. The outer bearings 12 are adjustable and locking-means are provided for both bearings 11, 12.
