Blind landing aids
Abstract
Abstract 1,237,480. Blind landing. THOMSON-CSF. 19 Dec., 1969 [3 Jan., 1969], No. 62109/69. Heading H4D. A system to aid the landing of an aircraft at an airfield comprises: on the aircraft a laser 10, Fig. 2, emitting an infra-red beam and optical means causing the beam to carry out a television type scan of the landing strip P, Fig. 1; on the ground a plurality of responder beacons 2 arranged along the landing strip and emitting a radio pulse when scanned by the infra-red beam; and back on the aircraft a receiver 26, for the radio pulses, feeding the intensity grid of a C.R.T. scanned in synchronism with the infra-red beam. The infra-red beam is able to penetrate fog and gives the pilot a representation on the C.R.T. of the landing strip perimeter. The optical scanning means comprises for the line scan, a rotating mirror drum 11 and for the frame scan an oscillating mirror 14 moved by a coupling with the diaphragm of a loud-speaker 17. The C.R.T. frame deflection signal is derived from the generator 18 which energizes the loudspeaker, and a light beam from source 27 is reflected by mirror drum 11 and detected by means 28 to give synchronizing pulses for the C.R.T. line scan.
