Improvements in Distant Liquid Level Indicators.
Abstract
Abstract 123,729. Badin, R. E. Aug. 19, 1916, [Convention date]. Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid.-In apparatus particularly intended for indicating the liquid level in the petrol tanks of motor cars and aeroplanes, air is forced by a pump 1 into an open-ended pipe 4 dipping into the liquid in the tank 3 until it escapes from the pipe and bubbles up through the liquid, the air pressure, which is a measure of the head of liquid in the tank, being indicated by a gauge 5. The pump barrel 6, Fig. 2, is made in one piece with the pressure-gauge frame 7. , The plunger 12 is withdrawn against the compression of a spring 11, which, when the plunger rod 8 is released, returns the plunger so as to force air through an adjustable outlet 13 into a chamber 19, to which the air pipes are connected. The glass 32 is held in the frame by an elastic ring 33 driven into a conical groove in the frame and secured by white lead, shellac or cement. The pipe 4 may be enclosed in a perforated sheath so as to avoid fluctions of air pressure due to oscillations of the liquid around the pipe.
