Abstract

Abstract 1,080,658. Transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 4, 1966 [June 8, 1965], No. 19655/66. Heading H1T. [Also in Division H2] A battery charger for a battery-operated portable appliance, e.g. a toothbrush, comprises an insulating base 10 having a well 16 for the reception of an end of the appliance containing a coil 5 which when so positioned, forms the secondary winding of a transformer whose primary winding 36 is mounted in a receptacle 26 and around a stud 30. Members 26, 30 are of magnetic material and are secured together by a rivet 32 to form the transformer core. The winding 36, its terminals 36a, 36b and the ends 40 of the supply lead are moulded in an insert 42 of insulating material having a side portion projecting through a slot 26a in the receptacle 26. In assembly the insert 42 is placed in the receptacle 26 over the stud 30 and through the slot 26a, after which the upper part of the receptacle 26 is fitted around the well 16 so that a lug 44 thereon engages the slot 26a, and the stud 30 passes through a sealed hole 24 in the base of the well 16. Alternatively the stud 30 may be moulded with member 36 in the insert 42. The coil 5 supplies a charging circuit in the appliance.
