Production of filled polyamides
Abstract
Abstract A polymide-filler composition is produced by mixing mineral hydrated aluminium silicate particles which are coated with a solid lactam or amino acid or a partly polymerized product thereof with unpolymerized or partly polymerized polyamide-forming material and polymerizing both polyamide-forming components of the mixture. The aluminium silicate may be of formula xAl2O3ySiO2zH2O where x, y and z are integers, e.g. kaolin or Fuller's earth, and may contain 2% of the oxides of Fe, Ti, Ca, Mg, K or Na. Its particle size may be 0.1-10 microns. 20-40% may be used. The coating may be 5% by weight of the surrounding polyamide. The products may be made into shaped articles. In examples particles coated with partly polymerized e -caprolactam are added to hexamethylene diammonium adipate containing some acetic acid before this is polymerized
