Laser scalpel for surgery - has focussing system in tubular housing flexibly joint to laser source and hand-held by operator
Abstract
Abstract A CO2 gas laser and a hand-held converging optical system are situated inside a tubular support. The laser beam is guided onto the conveying optical system by an articulated cam fitted with mirror, or a flexible fibre optic waveguide. The laser beam is focussed to a point which the surgeon, using the hand-held system can then place over the part of the patient's body to be treated. The converging optical system comprises a converging lens and an electrode fixed to, but electrically isolated from the support. Its free end is situated close to the focussed point of the laser beam. The electrode is connected via the terminal to a high frequency electric generator. A second electrode also connected to the generator, is placed between the patient and the operating table and is directly in contact with the patient's body.
