Artificial marble cast from mineral filled polyester resin - to complement appearance and density with toughness at less cost
Abstract
Abstract An artificial marble is made by dispersing a finely ground opaque filler in a polyester resin and combining this with a catalysed resin and concentrated colourant to produce a cast slab which can be polished after hardening. The artificial marble is of similar appearance and wt. to marble, but cheaper and tougher. Pref. the filler is a white, metallic oxide, as used for 'Lithapone' blocks (RTM), at a loading of 1 kg filler/3 litres polyester varnish, adjusted by use of a thicker varnish to a viscosity to allow casting at 15-30 deg.C to a depth of 2-5 mm. The uniform colour of the filled resin may be modified by partial dispersion of additional colourant(s) to resemble red and/or green veins in natural marble. The mixt. is cast on a polished or coated surface. The surface of the polished casting may be protected by a transparent varnish.
