Detector grid for buried piping - comprises number of magnets orientated to produce detectable field pattern when placed in vicinity of pipe
Abstract
Abstract A buried element such as a water or gas pipe or electrical cable is provided with a warning element comprising a grid containing a magnetic material. By creating several magnetic fields which are successively detected the path and type of the buried element is determined. A grid of an extruded plastic material is formed with a particular width to cover a pipe (5). The pipe is buried to a depth (6) from the surface (7) and the grid (4) is arranged to cover its length. Several bipolar permanent magnets (9-13) are integrated with the grid to produce magnetic fields (14). These fields are spaced and orientated at particular dispositions to produce magnetic fields (15-19) detectable by an appropriate sensor.
