Abstract A monitoring arrangement (12, 13) which has a device (12) which records the sparkovers of the spark gap is assigned to an overvoltage arrester (11) which has at least one spark gap (28-19). In order to be able to record the temporal sequence of the sparkovers and also their intensity at a location remote from the overvoltage arrester (11), the device is an evaluation device (12), responding to light signals, which is connected by means of an optical waveguide (13) to the spark gap (28-19).
