Abstract

Abstract The filter has a screen size of 0.5-4, pref. 2mm. and is e.g. terracotta. The bed surface provides limited areas on which a film of bacteria will remain firmly fixed, even during vigorous washing and, over remaining areas, a smooth surface from which bacterial growth can be washed away. The filter bed is now used in anaerobic conditions to effect a denitrification of waster to be treated. Pref. both water to be treated and counter-current washing water are deoxygenated before being passed through the filter bed. After being deoxygenated, water for treatment is pref. delivered into the filter vessel below the lower level to which water is allowed to fall. A complete treatment, plant pref. includes nitrification via an activated sludge process followed by anaerobic biological denitrification via the filter bed. Used for purificn. of waste water via biological filters. Simplified process of nitrificationis followed by denitrification.
