Hollow fibre bundle for fluid treatment - partic. useful for dialysis or ultrafiltration
Abstract
Abstract An appts. for treatment of fluids, partic. by dialysis or ultrafiltration, consists of a no. of hollow fibres held at their ends in plates and contained closely in a shell, so that they are in contact with one another. The shell is made wholly or partly of an elastic matl. such as rubber or of a thermo-retractable matl., and it extends over at least 60% of the length of the hollow fibres. Unions fitted over the ends of the shell carry the inlet and outlet for the shell-side fluid. End pieces fitted over the unions carry the inlet and outlet for the fluid which flows inside the fibres. All processes for treatment of fluids where mass transfer (or heat transfer) takes place, where the treated fluid has different compsn. or props. from the untreated fluid, e.g. dialysis (artificial kidneys), direct osmosis, gas-gas or liq-gas interchange (artificial lung), ultrafiltration, inverse osmosis, gas permeation, mixing.
