Hydrated mixt. of tetracalcium aluminate and tobermorite - as whitener for paper and paint
Abstract
Abstract Mixed hydrate of tetracalcium aluminate and tobermorite is claimed which corresponds to a stable mixt. of 4CaO.Al2O3.nH2O (n=10-20) and xCaO.ySiO2.zH2O, where x/y is 0.4-3 and z/y is 0.5-6. The mixt comprises 42-97% calcium aluminate and 3-58% tobermorite. Used in the paint and paper industries as a whitener, the matl. has suitable fineness, whiteness, insolubility and inertness. Its water content gives it a low density. Its crystal structure is hexagonal platelets which are conducive to ease of spreading, mixing etc. in paints and paper pastes, thus keeping down costs since small quantities are needed.
