Anti-fouling paints - contg micro-encapsulated toxic agents
Abstract
Abstract Anti-fouling paints are made by incorporating microcapsules contg. toxic products, such as salts of Sn, Pb or Hg, Cu oxides, arsines or bio-degradable poisons, by slow speed mixing 5-25% of the micro-capsules in the paint. The envelope of the capsules is of gelatine, nitrocellulose or methylcellulose. The toxic agent may be released by osmosis through the capsule wall, or may contain a swelling agent such as bentonite which swells with moisture and bursts the capsule. Inclusion of a resin, which polymerizes by the action of water, in the toxic paste, helps to slow the diffusion of the toxic agent. The anti-fouling props. of the paint are retained over a long period.
