Abstract
Abstract Catalysts for removal of impurities or toxic cpds. from exhaust gases of i.c. engines by oxidation of CO and hydrocarbons and for reduction of nitrogen oxides are supported on a carrier of synthetic mullite (of formula 3 Al2O3. 2SiO2). The mullite pref. has a surface area of 10-300 m2/g. and pore volume (mercury method) >0.20 cm3/g. It may be used in particulate or monolithic form, or as a coating on a mineral base. The catalysts are thermally and chemically stable, and may be used as >=1095 degrees C.
