Exhaust gas treating catalyst - having a carbon support and a metal or metal compound
Abstract
Abstract Treatment of automobile exhaust gases (congt. oxides of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons), in two stages; the first involving the use of a carbon-free catalyst capable of catalysing the reduction of oxides of nitrogen by means of all the carbon monooxide present, and of promoting the reaction of oxygen with carbon monoxide and the hydrocarbons; and the second involving the use of a catalyst having a carbon support impregnated with a metallic material which catalyses the reduction of oxides of nitrogen unreduced from the first stage. The carbon-contng. catalysts are cheap, effective for exhaust gases contng. a minimum of reducing gases, and a large number of metallic materials are effective on the supports.
