Abstract

Abstract Disclosed is the use of a polymer material in an optical waveguide structure. The polymer material may be used in either the cladding (120) or the core material (105) of an optical waveguide. The use of polymer material as such is advantageous in that the index of refraction of polymer material varies significantly with changing temperature. The polymer material is subjected to a heating mechanism (205) and/or a cooling mechanism (210) to manipulate the index of refraction as desired.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 60 words
A waveguide, comprising: a core having a first index of refraction, said first index of refraction varying upon the application of heat according to a first thermal coefficient; and a polymer cladding material in contact with the core, said cladding material having a second index of refraction which varies upon the application of heat according to a second thermal coefficient.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 24 words
The waveguide of claim 1, wherein said second thermal coefficient is greater than said first thermal coefficient by a factor of at least 5.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 38 words
The waveguide of claim □, wherein said second index of refraction varies between a first value that is greater than the first index of refraction and a second value that is less than the first index of refraction.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
The waveguide of claim 1, further comprising an electrical heating element coupled to the polymer cladding material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
The waveguide of claim 1, further comprising a source of laser radiation positioned to direct laser radiation at the polymer cladding material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
The waveguide of claim 1, further comprising a thermo-electric cooler coupled to the polymer cladding material.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The waveguide of claim 2, further comprising an electrical heating element coupled to the polymer cladding material.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
The waveguide of claim 2, further comprising a source of laser radiation positioned to direct laser radiation at the polymer cladding material.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 59 words
A waveguide, comprising: a polymer core having a first index of refraction, said first index of refraction varying upon the application of heat according to a first thermal coefficient; and a cladding material in contact with the core, said cladding material having a second index of refraction which varies upon the application of heat according to second thermal coefficient.
