Abstract

Abstract In a method of negotiating a service configuration in a communication system having first and second common channels shared by communication devices in the communication system, a request message indicative of a proposed service configuration is generated (20); the request message is transmitted (26) over the first common channel; an information data signal in accordance with the proposed service configuration is encoded if a response message is indicative of an acceptable service configuration; and the information data signal is encoded with a universal default service configuration if the response message is not indicative of an acceptable service configuration.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 99 words
A method of negotiating a service configuration in a communication system having first and second common channels which are shared by communication devices in said communication system, the method comprising the steps of: generating a request message indicative of a proposed service configuration; transmitting said request message over said first common channel; encoding an information data signal in accordance with said proposed service configuration if a response message is indicative of an acceptable service configuration; and encoding said information data signal with a universal default service configuration if said response message is not indicative of an acceptable service configuration.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 87 words
A method according to Claim 1, wherein said request message is generated in a first communication device and said transmitted request message is received at a second communication device, the method comprising the further steps of: receiving said transmitted request message at said second communication device; determining, in said second communication device, whether said proposed service configuration is acceptable to said second communication device; generating, in said second communication device, a response message in accordance with said determination; and transmitting said response message over said common channel.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which said request message is transmitted from a mobile station (6) over a random access channel defining said first common channel.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 31 words
A method according to any of Claims 1 to 3, in which said response message is transmitted from a base station (4) over a paging channel defining said second common channel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which said request message is transmitted from a base station (4) over a paging channel defining said first common channel.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 33 words
A method according to any of Claims 1, 2 and 5, in which said response message is transmitted from a mobile station (6) over a random access channel defining said second common channel.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 34 words
A method according to any preceding claim, in which said response message is indicative of acceptance of said proposed service configuration, rejection of said proposed service configuration, or suggestion of an alternative service configuration.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 33 words
A method according to any preceding claim, in which said communication system is a wireless communication system and communication within said wireless communication system is by means of code division multiple access signals.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 22 words
A method according to any of Claims 1 to 5, in which said response message is transmitted within a channel assignment message.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 18 words
A method according to any preceding claim, in which said service configuration provides a forward link multiplex option.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 18 words
A method according to any preceding claim, in which said service configuration provides a reverse link multiplex option.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 17 words
A method according to any preceding claim, in which said service configuration provides forward link transmission rates.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 17 words
A method according to any preceding claim, in which said service configuration provides reverse link transmission rates.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 16 words
A method according to any preceding claim, in which said service configuration provides a service option.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 144 words
A communication device in a communication system having first and second common channels which are shared by communication devices in said communication system, the communication device comprising: a service negotiator for generating a request message indicative of a proposed service configuration; a transmitter for transmitting said request message over said first common channel; and an encoder, interposed between said service negotiator and said transmitter, for encoding an information data signal in accordance with a service configuration selected by said service negotiator; wherein said service negotiator directs said encoder to encode said information data signal in accordance with said proposed service configuration if a response message is indicative of an acceptable service configuration, and wherein said service negotiator directs said encoder to encode said information data signal with a universal default service configuration if said response message is not indicative of an acceptable service configuration.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 46 words
A communication device according to Claim 15, further comprising a receiver for receiving a response message indicative of a response to said proposed service configuration, and in which said service negotiator is further for determining whether said response is indicative of a mutually acceptable service configuration.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 35 words
A communication device according to Claim 16, further comprising: a decoder, interposed between said service negotiator and said receiver, for decoding a received signal in accordance with said service configuration selected by said service negotiator.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 78 words
A communication device according to any of Claims 15 to 17, in which said service negotiator is adapted to direct said decoder to decode said received signal in accordance with said proposed service configuration if said response message is indicative of an acceptable service configuration, and said service negotiator is adapted to direct said decoder to decode said received signal with a universal default service configuration if said response message is not indicative of an acceptable service configuration.
