Abstract

Abstract A child safety seat comprises a base (34) adapted to rest on a vehicle seat, a seat body (32) mounted on the base (34) and a pair of releasable connectors (42) projecting from the base (34) and having a first latch (100) for engagement with a standard anchorage unit associated with the vehicle seat. Each connector (42, 44) is secured to the base (34) by a retractable coupling member (62) having a second latch (116) adapted to block retraction of the coupling member (62) when the coupling member (62) is fully extended. The first latch (100) is coupled to the second latch (116) to allow disengagement of the second latch (116) when the first latch (100) is engaged with a standard anchorage unit.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 127 words
A child safety seat comprising a base (34) adapted to rest on a vehicle seat, a seat body (32) mounted on the base (34) and a releasable connector (42) projecting from the base (34) and having a first latch (100) for engagement with a standard anchorage unit associated with the vehicle seat, characterised in that the connector (42, 44) is secured to the base (34) by a retractable coupling member (62) having a second latch (116) adapted to block retraction of the coupling member (62) when the coupling member (62) is fully extended, and link means (128) coupling the first latch (100) to the second latch (116) to allow disengagement of the second latch (116) when the first latch (100) is engaged with a standard anchorage unit.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 61 words
A child safety seat according to claim 1, wherein a pawl (72) is mounted on the retractable coupling member (62) and arranged engage with complementary formations (86) on the base (34) to resist protraction of the retractable coupling member (62) and a manually operable release mechanism (88, 96, 98) for causing said pawl (72) to disengage from said complementary formations (86).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 69 words
A child safety seat according to claim 2, wherein said manually operable release mechanism comprises a first cam formation (96) on the pawl (72), a second cam formation (98) on the retractable coupling member (62) and a cam follower (94) connected to a handle (88) and arranged to engage between said first and second cam formations to cause angular movement of the pawl (72 relative to the base (62).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
A child safety seat according to claim 3, wherein one of said first and second cam formations comprises an arcuate slot (96) and the other of said first and second cam formations comprises a straight slot (98).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
A child safety seat according to claim 2, 3 or 4, wherein the manually operable release mechanism (88, 96, 98) is positioned so as to be inaccessible when the base (34) is positioned on a vehicle seat.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
A child safety seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the second latch (116) is mounted for a predetermined range of angular movement on the retractible coupling member (62) for engagement with a complementary formation (60) on the base (34).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 110 words
A child safety seat according to claim 6, wherein the link means comprises a release lever (118) mounted for angular movement on the retractible coupling member (62) and having a stop formation (124) arranged to engage with a complementary formation (126) on the second latch (116) for varying said predetermined range of angular movement in dependence on the orientation of the release lever (118), a position sensor (110) linked to the release lever (118) and responsive to engagement of the first latch (100) to move the release lever (118) to an orientation in which said predetermined range of angular movement includes an orientation in which the second latch (116) disengages.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 31 words
A child safety seat according to claim 7, wherein the stop formation comprises a pin (124) and the complementary formation comprises an arcuate slot (126) with the pin (124) engaged therein.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 34 words
A child safety seat according to claim 7 or 8, wherein the position sensor (100) comprises a detent adapted to engage with the first latch (108) thereby to retain it in its engaged position.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 36 words
A child safety seat according to claim 9, wherein the release lever (118) includes a manually engageable formation (136) for causing movement of the disengagement of the position sensor (100) to release the first latch (108).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 47 words
A child safety seat according to any preceding claim, wherein a second releasable connector (42, 44) has a first latch (100) for engagement with a second standard anchorage unit associated with the vehicle seat, the second releasable connector (44) being secured to said retractable coupling member (62).
