Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a method for identifying base stations of a time division cellular network in a mobile station. An advantage of the invention is the reduction in time needed for the identification of new base stations. In accordance with the invention frame timing difference data for the neighbour base stations (301) and/or the broadcast control channel time slot data for the neighbour base stations are transmitted from the serving base station to the mobile station; reception times for the neighbour base stations' system data are determined in the mobile station on the basis of said frame timing differences and/or the broadcast control channel time slot data (302) and system data are read and neighbour base stations are identified (303). The invention is also directed to a mobile station applying the method. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 79 words
A method for identifying base stations of a time division cellular network in a mobile station, characterised in that frame timing difference data for neighbour base stations are transmitted from the serving base station to the mobile station (301; 501) and reception times for the neighbour base stations' system data are determined in the mobile station on the basis of said frame timing differences (302; 502) and system data are read and neighbour base stations are identified (303; 503).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 1, characterised in that the serving base station maintains a list of frame timing differences with base stations on a neighbour list (201, 202).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method of claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the frame timing difference data are transmitted to the mobile station on the slow associated control channel SACCH (301).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method of claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the frame timing difference data are transmitted to the mobile station on the broadcast control channel BCCH or common control channel CCCH.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 56 words
The method of claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterised in that a time window is determined in the mobile station on the basis of the frame timing difference for the appearance of an identification code in the system data of a new base station and said identification code is read in said time window (302).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 53 words
The method of any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that in a mobile station in idle state the frame timing difference data are read from the broadcast control channel BCCH or common control channel CCCH and used for determining the read times for the system data of the neighbour base stations.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 82 words
A method for identifying base stations of a time division cellular network in a mobile station, characterised in that broadcast control channel time slot data of the neighbour base stations are transmitted from the serving base station to the mobile station (601) and reception times for the neighbour base stations' system data are determined in the mobile station on the basis of said broadcast control channel time slot data (602) and system data are read and neighbour base stations are identified (603).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 7, characterised in that data for the neighbour base stations' frame timing differences are transmitted from the serving base station to the mobile station.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
The method of claim 7, characterised in that the reading of system data and identification of neighbour base stations include field strength measurements.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 74 words
A mobile station (600) comprising a control unit (602) that includes means for identifying base stations of a time division cellular network, characterised in that said means comprises means for identifying, reading and storing a frame timing difference list for the neighbour base stations coming from a base station (603); and means for determining reception times for the system data of a neighbour base station on the basis of the frame timing differences (604).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 78 words
A mobile station (900) comprising a control unit (902) that includes means for identifying base stations of a time division cellular network, characterised in that said means comprises means for identifying, reading and storing broadcast control channel time slot data for the neighbour base stations coming from a base station (903); and means for determining reception times for the system data of a neighbour base station on the basis of said broadcast control channel time slot data (904).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 68 words
The mobile station (900) of claim 11, characterised in that the means further comprises means for identifying, reading and storing a frame timing difference list for the neighbour base stations coming from a base station (905); and means for determining reception times for the system data of a neighbour base station on the basis of the frame timing differences and the broadcast control channel time slot data (904).
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 42 words
A base station (BTS), for a mobile communications network, comprising: means to calculate frame timing difference data for neighbour base stations; and means for transmitting said frame timing difference data when a mobile station enters the service area of the base station.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 47 words
A base station (BTS), for a mobile communications network, comprising: means to calculate the broadcast control channel time slot data of neighbour base stations; and means to transmit said broadcast control channel time slot data when a mobile station enters the service area of the base station.
