Abstract
Abstract A method and apparatus for registration of a seal to a perforation on a plastic bag include a drum (28) for forming a seal on a continuous plastic film and a downstream perforator/cutting station (22) for forming a perforation on the film with respect to the location of the seal. The perforation is properly registered to the seal by sensing the seal location directly, with a seal sensor (112) located near the perforator/cutting station.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim
120 words
An apparatus for making plastic bags from a
continuous film of material (11) comprising: a sealing drum (28) having at least one seal bar
(30) for imparting transverse seals to the film (11) at
regularly spaced intervals; a downstream processor (22); a seal sensor (112) disposed near the film path
between the seal drum (28) and the downstream processor
(22), wherein the seal sensor provides a seal signal
indicative of a seal location; and a controller (1510) coupled to the downstream
processor for controlling the location on the film on
which the downstream processor acts, and further
coupled to receive the seal signal, wherein the
controller controls the location on which the processor
acts in response to the seal signal.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
32 words
An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which
the downstream processor is a perforating station, and
wherein the controller controls the position of the
perforation in response to the seal signal.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
21 words
An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in
which the at least one seal bar includes a knurled portion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
24 words
An apparatus as claimed in claim 3 in which
the knurled portion is a textured tape disposed on the at
least one seal bar.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
36 words
An apparatus as claimed in anyone of claims 1
to 4 and further comprising a shoe (1507) disposed upstream
of the seal sensor, and in the film path, whereby the shoe
removes wrinkles from the film.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
25 words
An apparatus as claimed in anyone of the
preceding claims and comprising means for intermittently
disabling the seal sensor and for enabling the seal sensor.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
49 words
An apparatus as claimed in anyone of the
preceding claims and further comprising a reservoir for
holding a luminescent material near the film path, and an
applicator coupled to the reservoir and disposed to apply
the material to the film. and wherein the seal sensor is a
luminescent sensor.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
60 words
A method of making plastic bags from a
continuous film of material (11) comprising: imparting transverse seals to the film at
regularly spaced intervals; processing the film downstream; sensing the seal location; providing a seal signal indicative of the seal
location; and controlling the location on the film on which the
downstream processor acts relative to the sensed seal
location.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
37 words
A method as claimed in claim 8 wherein the
step of processing includes the step of perforating the
film, and wherein the step of controlling includes the step
of positioning the perforation relative to the seal
location.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
