Abstract
Abstract An airbag connector and cable assembly (2) comprises a connector (4) having a cable receiving cavity (18) and a cable outlet (28) extending perpendicularly to the cavity (18). A flat cable (6) terminated to the connector is folded along a fold (38) in the cable outlet region (26) of the connector. The cable is then looped over the fold (38) to provide a flexible loop (40). The loop (40) enables absorption of tolerance in the positioning of the cable at the outlet with respect to the fold, without causing undue force on the conductors that are bent through the fold. The latter insures a high reliability and is cost effective.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
156 words
A cable assembly comprising a housing (8,8') and a flat flexible cable (6) having a plurality of conductors extending in a juxtaposed manner in the plane of the cable, the housing having a cavity (18,18') for receiving a cavity portion (20,20') of the cable therein, the housing further comprising an outlet (28,28') through which an outlet portion (36) of the cable extends in a direction transverse to the portion of cable (20) within the cavity (18,18'), the cable further comprising a fold (38) substantially in the plane of the cable to effect a change in the direction of the flat cable substantially within its plane, the fold (38) being positioned in an outlet region (26,26') of the cavity (18') proximate the outlet (28,28'), characterized in that the outlet portion (36) of cable transverse to the cavity portion (20,20') of cable within the cavity (18,18') is looped over the fold (38), to provide a flexible loop (40).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
39 words
The assembly of claim 1 wherein the cable is looped through substantially 180° such that the cavity portion (20,20') of cable is substantially parallel to the outlet portion (36) of the cable, when considering the plane of the cable.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
26 words
The assembly of claim 1 wherein the cable outlet is provided with means (32,34,34') for gripping the cable in order to secure the flexible loop (40).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
32 words
The assembly of any preceding claim wherein the means for gripping the cable are provided with retention protrusions (32) that engage in cut-outs (34,34') in the outlet portion (36) of the cable.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
26 words
The assembly of any preceding claim wherein the outlet portion (36) of the cable extends at substantially 90° to the cavity portion (20) of the cable.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
38 words
The assembly of any preceding claim wherein the housing (8) is a housing of a connector (4), the connector having terminals (10) with insulation piercing contacts (16) that electrically contact the conductors of the cable cavity portion (20).
