Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
135 words
A surgical apparatus (16) for performing a
transmyocardial revascularization procedure, said
apparatus (16) comprising a handle portion (40); a tubular neck portion (42) connected to the
handle portion (40); a tapered piercing means (24) extending axially from
the distal end of said neck portion (42); characterised in that : an optical fibre means (26), a proximal end of
which is connectable to a laser source(30), extends
through said handle (40) and said neck portion (42) into
said tapered piercing means (24) and is movable through
said piercing means (24) by means on said handle portion
(4) for moving said optical fibre means axially within
said handle portion (4) and said neck portion (42) and
thus outwardly from said piercing means (24) as laser
energy is emitted from said fibre means (26) during a
surgical procedure.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
38 words
A surgical apparatus according to claim 1 further
comprising a head portion on the distal end of the neck
portion enlarged with respect to the tubular neck
portion, the tapered piercing means extending axially
from the head portion.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
81 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to claim 1 or wherein claim 2
said handle portion (40) has an axial lumen (44), a movable shuttle (46)
within said lumen (44) having an axial bore through which said
optical fiber means (26) extends; and a control knob (50) fixed to
said shuttle (46) and extending outwardly from said handle
portion (40); whereby said optical fiber means (26) can be moved
axially within said handle portion (40) by movement of said
control knob (50).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to any one of claims 1 to 3
wherein said tubular neck portion (42) has a curved
configuration.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
42 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to any one of the
preceding claims wherein said tubular neck portion (42) is made
of a flexible material to enable said head portion (20) to be
oriented to different positions relative to said handle
portion (40).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
60 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to any one of the
preceding claims wherein said handle portion (40) has a
threaded socket (62), said tubular neck portion (42) being
threadedly attached to said threaded socket; and an
adjustment nut (64) in said threaded socket (62) to facilitate the
fixed orientation of said head portion (20) relative to said
handle portion (40).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
57 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to any one of the
preceding claims wherein said head portion (20) attached to the
distal end of said neck portion (42) has a radial flange
portion forming a transverse end surface (22) adapted to
contact the outer surface of the patient's heart, said
piercing means (24) extending beyond said end surface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
37 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to claim 6
wherein said piercing means (24) comprises a
tapered distal end portion of said neck portion (42) which
extends through said head portion (20) and beyond said end
surface (22).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
25 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to claim 7 wherein
said tapered distal end portion extends approximately 5 mm (0.20
inches) beyond said end surface (22).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
33 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to any one of the
preceding claims wherein said enlarged head portion (20) has a
circular end face (22) having a diameter of about 9.53 mm (0.375 inches).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
48 words
A surgical apparatus (16) according to any one of the
preceding claims connected to a laser source (30) wherein said laser source (30) is a
pulsed holmium laser operating at a wave length of 1.8 to
2.2 microns and a pulse rate in the range of 2-25 pps.
