Abstract

Abstract A field programmable gate array (FPGA) with a programmable function unit (PFU) that includes a look-up table (LUT) for implementing a plurality of functions including first and second RAM cells (102, 108), and a programmable switching device (114) dedicated to coupling and decoupling the RAM cells. The first and second RAM cells are coupled to respective first and second read/write ports (104, 110). The RAM cells function individually as single-port RAM cells when decoupled by the switching device. However, the RAM cells share data to function collectively as a dual-port RAM cell when coupled by the switching device. The dual-port RAM cell is accessible by both the first and second read/write ports.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 74 words
An integrated circuit including a field programmable gate array (FPGA) which includes a programmable function unit (PFU), comprising: first and second programmable elements for generating various functions including first and second respective RAM cells (102, 108) in response to a configuration bit stream; and a programmable switching device (114) responsive to the configuration bit stream for providing bit-level coupling between the RAM cells so that the RAM cells together provide a multi-port RAM cell.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 25 words
The integrated circuit of claim 1 in which the first and second programmable elements are included in one or more look-up tables (LUTs) (202, 204).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
The integrated circuit of claim 1 in which the first and second programmable elements are included in a single PFU.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
The integrated circuit of claim 1 in which the first and second programmable elements are included in adjacent PFUs.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
The integrated circuit of claim 1 in which the first and second RAM cells are coupled to respective first and second read/write ports (104, 110), thereby providing the multi-port RAM cell with at least two read/write ports.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 182 words
A method of programming and operating a field programmable gate array (FPGA) including a plurality of programmable function units (PFUs) and a programmable interconnection network, comprising the steps of: applying a configuration bit stream to the FPGA for instructing a first PFU to function as a first set of RAM cells (102) coupled to a first read/write port (104) and as a second set of RAM cells (108) coupled to a second read/write port (110), and for instructing switching devices (114) in the first PFU to provide bit-level coupling between pairs of the RAM cells so that each RAM cell is a member of one coupled pair, with each coupled pair including one RAM cell from the first set of RAM cells and one RAM cell from the second set of RAM cells, wherein each coupled pair provides a dual-port RAM cell that is accessible by both the first and second read/write ports; writing data through the first read/write port into at least one dual-port RAM cell; and reading data through the second read/write port from at least one dual-port RAM cell.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 35 words
The method of claim 6, including reading data through the first read/write port from at least one dual-port RAM cell, and writing data through the second read/write port into at least one dual-port RAM cell.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method of claim 7, including writing data through the first read/write port into one dual-port RAM cell; and simultaneously reading data through the second read/write port from one dual-port RAM cell
