Abstract

Abstract A rotor for a reluctance machine comprises a rotor made up of a stack of laminations defining a cross-sectionally integral rotor profile consisting of rotor poles arranged about a rotor core. A non-magnetic insert is arranged axially along the stack of laminations and a filler spans the interpole region between rotor poles. The filler is attached at either end of the rotor to an end cap and is secured to the insert intermediate the rotor ends. The insert provides a means of securement for the filler to provide stability at high speed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 58 words
A rotor for a reluctance machine comprising a rotor shaft, at least a pair of rotor members mounted on the shaft, each defining rotor poles and interpole regions therebetween, a filler in each interpole region and at least one insert also mounted on the rotor shaft, arranged between the rotor members, to which insert the fillers are secured.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 25 words
A rotor as claimed in claim 1 in which the filler and the ends of the rotor poles define a substantially continuous radially outer surface.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
A rotor as claimed in claim 2 in which the cross-section of the rotor is substantially circular.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A rotor as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 in which the filler substantially fills the interpole region.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
A rotor as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 in which the filler is a plate extending between the radially outer edges of radially adjacent rotor poles.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 27 words
A rotor as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 in which one of the rotor poles and the filler is keyed to the other.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
A rotor as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 including an end plate mounted on each axial end of the rotor and being connected with the fillers.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 33 words
A rotor as claimed in claim 7 in which the end plates have an outer periphery which is in conformity with the radially outer surface defined by the rotor poles and the fillers.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
A rotor as claimed in claim 7 or 8 in which at least one plate and the adjacent fillers are a unitary construction.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
A rotor as claimed in claim 7 or 8 in which one of the end plates and the fillers is keyed to the other.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 20 words
A rotor as claimed in any preceding claim in which the insert is a unitary structure separating the rotor members.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 32 words
A switched reluctance machine comprising a stator defining stator poles, a rotor as claimed in any preceding claim and a phase winding arranged to energise at least one of the stator poles.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 76 words
A method of assembling a rotor for a reluctance machine comprising: a) mounting a first stack of laminations on a rotor shaft to define a rotor shape having radially extending rotor poles; b) mounting an insert on the rotor shaft; c) mounting a second stack of laminations on the rotor shaft further to define the rotor shape having similarly radially extending rotor poles; and d) securing a filler between the rotor poles and to the insert.
