Abstract

Abstract A photosensitive high polymer film (2) is formed on the surface of at least one of a pair of substrates (1), the photosensitive high polymer generating refractive index anisotropy in the direction perpendicular to the polarization direction of absorbed light. First polarized light (3) is applied to, and absorbed in, the film, and second polarized light (4) having polarized components perpendicular to the polarization direction of the first polarized light is applied obliquely relative to the substrate surface to the film and absorbed therein. An orientation with pre-tilt (5) can be given to liquid crystal molecules without rubbing. A liquid crystal display of high display quality can be realized.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 121 words
A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal orientation structure comprising the steps of: preparing a substrate having a photosensitive high polymer film on a surface of the substrate, said photosensitive high polymer film having a nature of orientating a liquid crystal molecule in a direction perpendicular to a polarization direction of absorbed polarized light; absorbing first polarized light having a first polarization direction in said photosensitive high polymer film; and absorbing second polarized light in said photosensitive high polymer film, said second polarized light having polarized components perpendicular to the first polarization direction, wherein the optical axis of at least one of said first and second polarized light is inclined oblique relative to the surface of said photosensitive high polymer film.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 52 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said first light absorption step is a step of applying polarized light to said photosensitive high polymer film along the normal direction, and said second light absorption step is a step of applying polarized light to said photosensitive high polymer film along an oblique direction.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein each of said first and second light absorption steps is a step of applying polarized light to said photosensitive high polymer film along an oblique direction.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said first light absorption step is a step of applying polarized light to said photosensitive high polymer film along the normal direction, and said second light absorption step is a step of applying light not polarized to said photosensitive high polymer film along an oblique direction.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 53 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said first light absorption step is a step of applying light not polarized to said photosensitive high polymer film along an oblique direction, and said second light absorption step is a step of applying polarized light to said photosensitive high polymer film along the normal direction.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 34 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein each of said first and second light absorption steps is a step of applying light not polarized to said photosensitive high polymer film along an oblique direction.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said first and second light absorption steps are performed at the same time by using two types of light not interfering with each other.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 85 words
A liquid crystal display comprising: a pair of substrates disposed substantially in parallel; an orientation film formed on a surface of one of the pair of substrates, said orientation film being made of photosensitive high polymer having a nature of orientating a liquid crystal molecule in a direction perpendicular to a polarization direction of absorbed polarized light; and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates, liquid crystal molecules of said liquid crystal layer having a pre-tilt imparted by said photosensitive high polymer.
