Abstract

Abstract Bone support apparatus is provided comprising an elongate support member (11) arranged, in use, to be inserted in the interior of a bone (12). A fixing bracket (16) is provided at the distal end of the bone support (11) and inside the support (11) there is a projection member (13) which can be moved along the bone support (11) such that prongs (13a, 13b and 13c) engage with a deflector (15) and are deflected out of apertures (14) to engage the interior of the bone (12) to support the bone during treatment of a fracture.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 67 words
Bone support apparatus comprising an elongate support member arranged, in use, to be inserted in the interior of a bone, the bone support member being substantially hollow, the apparatus further comprising a fixing bracket attached to or integral with the bone support member, the bracket defining at least one aperture arranged, in use, to receive a fixing member for fixing the bone support relative to the bone.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 33 words
Bone support apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, in which the fixing member comprises a screw arranged to pass through the aperture in the fixing bracket to engage a portion of the bone.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 146 words
Bone support apparatus comprising an elongate bone support member arranged, in use, to be inserted in a bone, the bone support member being substantially hollow along at least part of its length, and being arranged, in use, to receive an elongate projection, the elongate projection being arranged, in use, to be inserted in a first end of the bone support member and to extend along the bone support member, the bone support member further comprising at least one aperture towards a second end thereof, through which a portion of the projection is arranged to extend to engage the interior of the bone, wherein the bone support member comprises deflector means arranged, in use, to deflect a portion of the projection so that the portion of the projection is guided out of the aperture during insertion of the projection along the interior of the bone support member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 50 words
Bone support apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, in which the bone support member comprises a plurality of apertures in the region of the secured end thereof, the projection comprising a plurality of portions arranged respectively to extend through the apertures in the bone support member to engage the bone.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
Bone support apparatus as claimed in Claim 4, in which the deflector means is arranged to deflect each portion of the projection to guide each portion through the respective apertures in the bone support member.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 106 words
Bone support apparatus comprising an elongate support member arranged, in use, to be inserted in a bone, the bone support member being substantially hollow along at least part of its length and being arranged, in use, to receive an elongate projection, the elongate projection being arranged, in use, to be inserted in a first end of the bone support member and to extend along the bone support member, the bone support member further comprising three apertures located towards a second end thereof, wherein three portions of the projection are arranged, in use, to extend through the respective apertures and to engage the interior of the bone.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 98 words
Bone support apparatus comprising an elongate support member arranged, in use, to be inserted in a bone, the bone support member being substantially hollow along at least part of its length, and being arranged, in use, to receive an elongate projection, the elongate projection being arranged, in use, to be inserted in a first end of the bone support member and to extend along the bone support member, wherein a second, substantially opposed end of the bone support member is substantially blunt, such that it displaces cancellous bone during insertion of the bone support member along the bone.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 56 words
A method of supporting a bone, the method comprising inserting a bone support member along the interior of a bone and fixing the bone support member relative to the bone by inserting at least one fixing member through a bracket attached to or integral with the bone support member and into a portion of the bone.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of supporting a bone, the method comprising inserting a bone support member along the interior of a bone, inserting a projection into the bone support member, which bone support member is substantially hollow, such that at least three portions of the projecting means pass through apertures in the bone support member and into the interior of the bone to engage the interior of the bone.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 63 words
A method of supporting a bone, the method comprising inserting a bone support member along the interior of a bone, wherein the bone support member is substantially blunt at a leading edge thereof, such that the method includes displacing a cancellous portion of the bone by the bone support member during insertion of the bone support member into the interior of the bone.
