Abstract
Abstract Disclosed are coating compositions which include hydrogen silsesquioxane resin dissolved in saturated alkyl hydrocarbons. The compositions are useful for forming coatings which are thick and/or have good coating quality.

A coating composition comprising between 10 and 40 weight percent of hydrogen silsesquioxane resin diluted in a solvent comprising octane up to 40 weight percent of decane, and up to 80 weight percent of isooctane.

The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen silsesquioxane resin contains polymeric species such that at least 75% of the polymeric species have a molecular weight between 1200 and 100,000.

The coating composition of claim 1 or 2 also containing modifying ceramic oxide precursors comprising a compound containing an element selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, aluminum, tantalum, vanadium, niobium, boron and phosphorous wherein the compound contains at least one hydrolyzable substituent selected from alkoxy or acyloxy and the compound is present in an amount such that the silica coating contains 0.1 to 30 percent by weight modifying ceramic oxide.

The coating composition according to any of claims 1 to 3, also containing a platinum, rhodium or copper catalyst in an amount of between 5 and 1000 ppm platinum, rhodium or copper, based on the weight of hydrogen silsesquioxane resin.

The coating composition according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the hydrogen silsesquioxane resin is present in an amount between 15 and 30 weight percent.

The coating composition according to any of claims 1 or 2 wherein the solvent contains between 65 and 75 weight percent of isooctane, between 10 and 30 weight percent of decane and up to 25 weight percent of octane.
