Abstract

Abstract A child safety seat for use in a vehicle comprises a seat body (10) having a seat portion (14) and a backrest portion (16). Guides (52) on the seat body (10) define a strap path for a strap (50) of a vehicle seat belt which secures the seat body (10) to a vehicle seat. A strap deflecting lever (62) is movable between a first position clear of said strap path and a second position in which the strap (50) is deflected and thus tightened. <IMAGE>

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 52 words
A child safety seat according to claim 1, wherein the guide means comprises first and second strap guides (52, 252, 352) spaced apart from one another along said strap path and the strap deflecting means (60, 62; 260; 354, 356) is located between the first and second strap guides (52, 252, 352).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
A child safety seat according to claim 2, wherein the strap path between the first and second strap guides (52, 252, 352) is straight.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 62 words
A child safety seat according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the seat body comprises a moulded shell (10, 210, 310) having a pair of reinforcing beams (22, 222, 322; 24, 224, 324) projecting rearwardly from the backrest portion (16, 216, 316) and the strap guides comprises openings (52, 252, 352) in each of the beams (22, 222, 322; 24, 224, 324).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 46 words
A child safety seat according to any preceding claim, further comprising blocking means (66, 68; 354, 356) arranged to obstruct passage along said strap path of objects of larger cross-section than said strap (50, 248, 348) when the strap deflecting means is in its second position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 44 words
A child safety seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the strap deflecting means comprises a pivotally mounted lever (60, 62) and manually operable control means (82, 92, 122) for causing angular movement of said lever (60, 62) between said first and second positions.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 56 words
A child safety seat according to claims 5 and 6, wherein the blocking means comprises a shutter (66, 68) coupled to the control means (82, 92, 122) so as to be moved thereby into a position extending across part of the guide means (52) when the pivotally mounted lever (60, 62) is in its second position.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 50 words
A child safety seat according to claim 6 or 7, wherein the control means (82) comprises a shaft (82) extending longitudinally under the seat portion (14) and having a handle (86) on its front end, and coupling means (80) coupling the shaft (82) to the pivotally mounted lever (60, 62).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 52 words
A child safety seat according to claim 6 or 7, wherein the child restraint includes a buckle (42) mounted on a stalk (98), and the control means (82) comprises a pivotal mount (94) for the stalk (98) and coupling means (92) connecting the pivotal mount to the pivotally mounted lever (60, 62).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 71 words
A child safety seat according to claim 6 or 7, wherein the control means (82) comprises a flap (122) which is pivotally mounted in an opening (120) in the seat portion (14), and coupling means (126) connecting the flap (122) to the pivotally mounted lever (60, 62) so that the flap (122) is level with the seat portion (14) when the pivotally mounted lever (60, 62) is in its second position.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 70 words
A child safety seat according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein the strap deflecting means comprises a reaction member (274) having a recess (278) adjacent to said strap path and a clamping member (260) movable between said first position in which it is on the opposite side of said strap path to the reaction member (274) and said second position in which it extends into the recess (278).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 88 words
A child safety seat according to claim 11, wherein the clamping member comprises a clamping rod (260) journaled in a pivot bearing (264) mounted on the seat back (216), the recess (274) is of frustoconical shape having its apex coincident with said pivot bearing (264), and link means (266, 268) couples the clamping rod (260) to the seat shell (210) on the opposite side of the reaction member (274) to the pivot bearing (264) so as to constrain the clamping rod (260) to move in a conical path.
Claim 13

A child safety seat according to claim 12, wherein the link means comprises a lever (266) which is rigidly attached to the clamping rod (260) so as to project radially therefrom, and a link (268) pivotally attached at one end to a radially outer end of the lever (266) and pivotally attached at another end to the seat shell (210).
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 90 words
A child safety seat according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein the strap deflecting means comprises a flap (354, 356) pivotally mounted on the backrest (316) adjacent to the guide means (352) so as to be pivotable between said first position in which it abuts against the back of the backrest (316) and said second position in which it extends across the guide means (352), and manually operable control means (364, 366, 370) for causing angular movement of said lever (60, 62) between said first and second positions.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 43 words
A child safety seat according to claim 14, wherein the flap (354, 356), when in its second position, extends across the guide means (352) sufficiently to obstruct passage along said strap path of objects of larger cross-section than said strap (50, 248, 348).
