Abstract

Abstract A video conference may be held with a participant (node) being on a plain old telephone system by using a conventional private telephone system 53, a LAN 52, and a gateway system 20 that relays data, via a private branch exchange 10, to an information processing unit 54 that is on the external plain old telephone system, and to an information processing unit 100 that is connected to an extension telephone and a LAN. The gateway system comprises: a modem 81 for receiving a call from, or transmitting a call to, the plain old telephone system, and for modulating and demodulating a signal; multiplex/demultiplex means 82 for multiplexing voice information and computer data to prepare a packet, or for demultiplexing a packet to acquire voice data and computer data separately; a LAN adaptor 75 for transmitting and receiving computer data via the LAN; dialing means 75 for making a call to an extension telephone; signal processing means 83 for coding and decoding voice data; and AD/DA conversion means 84 for performing analog-digital or digital-analog conversion on a signal.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 164 words
A gateway system (20) for relaying data, via a private branch exchange (10), between an external information processing unit (54) over a plain old telephone system (53), and an internal node over an internal extension telephone system (51) and a LAN (52), comprising: means (81) for demodulating a packet that is received via said plain old telephone system, and for modulating a packet for transmission over said plain old telephone system, and for dialing an outside telephone line; means (82) for multiplexing voice data and computer data to form a packet for transmission over said plain old telephone system, and for demultiplexing a packet received over said plain old telephone system to acquire voice data and computer data separately; means (83) for coding or decoding said voice data; means (84) for performing digital-analog or analog-digital conversion on said voice data; means (85) for dialing an extension line via said private branch exchange; and a LAN adaptor (75) for exchanging computer data via said LAN.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 137 words
A method for controlling a gateway system (20) that relays data, via a private branch exchange (10), between a first information processing unit (54) at node A over an external plain old telephone system (53), and a second information processing unit (100) at node B over an internal telephone extension system (51) and a LAN (52), said method comprising the steps of: receiving a call from said node A to said gateway system; transmitting from said node A to said gateway system a packet that includes identification information for said node B; acquiring, by said gateway system, a telephone extension number for said node B according to said identification information; dialing, by said gateway system, of the telephone extension number for said node B; and establishing a LAN connection between said gateway system and said node B.
Claim 3
Independent Claim 125 words
A method for controlling a gateway system (20) that relays data, via a private branch exchange (10), between a first information processing unit (54) at node A over an external plain old telephone system (53), and a second information processing unit (100) at node B over an internal telephone extension system (51) and a LAN (52), said method comprising the steps of: establishing a LAN connection between said node B and said gateway system; transmitting, via the LAN, from said node B to said gateway system, a packet that includes a telephone number for said node A; dialing, by said gateway system, of said telephone number of said node A; and dialing, by said gateway system, of a telephone extension number for said node B.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 146 words
A method for controlling a gateway system (20) that relays data, via a private branch exchange (10), between a first information processing unit (54) over an external plain old telephone system (53), and a second information processing unit (100) over an internal telephone extension system (51) and a LAN (52), said method comprising the steps of: receiving, via said private branch exchange, a packet including voice data and computer data that is transmitted over said plain old telephone system by said first information processing unit; demodulating said packet; demultiplexing the resultant packet to acquire the voice data and the computer data separately; decoding and converting said voice data into an analog signal; transmitting said analog signal via said private branch exchange to a telephone extension associated with said second information processing unit; and transmitting said computer data over the LAN to said second information processing unit.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 126 words
A method for controlling a gateway system (20) that relays data, via a private branch exchange (10), between a first information processing unit (54) over an external plain old telephone system (53), and a second information processing unit (100) over an internal telephone extension system (51) and a LAN (52), said method comprising the steps of: receiving voice data via said private branch exchange from a telephone extension associated with said second information processing unit; digitizing and coding said received voice data; receiving computer data via the LAN from said second information processing unit; multiplexing said digitised, coded, voice data and said computer data and preparing a packet therefrom; and modulating and transmitting said packet via said private branch exchange to said first information processing unit.
