Abstract
Abstract A flexible implantable luminal device is disclosed, which is made from a porous cylindrical tube manufactured from extruded fluoropolymer. A fluoropolymer filament is wrapped helically around the external surface of the tube. The filament is fused to the tube to form a unitary composite structure by heating the wrapped tube to a temperature above the melting points of the fluoropolymers. The resulting composite is a radially reinforced flexible luminal prosthesis suitable for implantation, particularly, as a vascular graft or endoprosthesis. Also disclosed is a method for manufacturing the prosthesis.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
80 words
Am implantable luminal device, comprising: a flexible tube of a first fluoropolymer, said tube having a node/fibre microstructure, which is sufficiently porous to permit tissue ingrowth when implanted in the body; and a support component comprising at least one flexible filament of a second fluoropolymer, the at least one filament being wrapped helically around the external wall of the tube; wherein the first and second fluoropolymers, which may be the same or different, have substantially the same crystalline melting point.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
32 words
A luminal device according to claim 1, wherein the at least one filament is wrapped at an angle of from 30° to about 90° relative to the longitudinal axis of the tube.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
27 words
A luminal device according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the support component comprises two or more filaments wrapped helically around the external wall of the tube.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
A luminal device according to claim 3, wherein the filaments are wrapped helically in a substantially mutually parallel orientation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
18 words
A luminal device according to claim 3, wherein the filaments are wrapped helically in a substantially opposing orientation.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
23 words
A luminal device according to any preceding claim, wherein the at least one filament is substantially continuous along the length of the device.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
89 words
A method of making an implantable luminal device, comprising the steps of: a) helically wrapping a support component comprising at least one flexible filament of a first fluoropolymer around the external wall of a flexible tube of a second fluoropolymer, the tube having a node/fibre microstructure and being sufficiently porous to permit tissue ingrowth when implanted in the body; and b) fusing the support component to the tube by heating the filament-wrapped tube to a temperature in excess of the crystalline melting points of the first and second fluoropolymers.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
34 words
A method according to claim 7, wherein the first and second fluoropolymers are independently selected from polymers of tetrafluoroethylene, fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymers, tetrafluoroethylene copolymers with ethylene, tetrafluoroethylene copolymers with perfluorovinyl ethers, and mixtures thereof.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
14 words
A method according to claim 7, wherein the first and second fluoropolymers comprise polytetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
37 words
A method according to claim 7, 8 or 9, wherein the helically wrapping step further involves wrapping the filament component at an angle of from 30° to about 90° relative to the longitudinal axis of the tube.2
