Process for the stereoselective preparation of (-)3a,6,6,9a-tetramethyl-perhydronaphtho[2,1-b]furan
Abstract
Abstract Stereoselective prepn. of a cpd. (I) which is referred to as (-)-3a,6,6,9-tetramethyl-perhydro-naphtho(2,1-b)furan and is shown as being a 3a,6,6,9a-tetramethyl deriv. of formula (Ia), comprises dehydration and cyclisation of decahydro-2-hydroxy-2,5,5,8-tetramethyl-1-naphthalene-ethanol (II) in the liq. phase. The reaction is effected (a) at 10-50 degrees C in the presence of 10-100 wt.%, based on (II), of a commercial montmorillonite catalyst with high ion-exchange capacity, or (b) at 120-140 degrees C in the presence of 10-100 wt.% of an active acidic alumina commercially available for preparative column chromatography.
