Abstract

Abstract A system that allows a user to apply image processing functions to localized regions of a photographic or negative image supplied by a photographer. The image is displayed on a touch sensitive display and the user can, by touching the display, maneuver a window to pan, zoom-in and zoom-out on particular portions of the image to designate a region to be processed. The operator can precisely indicate where the artifact to be removed is located and will know precisely the area of the image that will be processed. Only the portion of image seen by the user in the window is processed when the user indicates a function should be applied to the image. That is, what the user sees is what is processed. The processed image can be printed or otherwise reproduced.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 98 words
A method of applying a function to an image, comprising: a. designating a center point of a region of the image to which the function will be applied in a window of fixed pixel size on a display displaying a portion of the image; b. adjusting a variable pixel size view port on the image in accordance with the designated center point; c. displaying a portion of the image designated by the view port in the window; and d. applying the function to the portion of the image visible within the window as defined by the view port.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 34 words
A method as recited in claim 1, wherein step a. comprises designating a pan operation and step b. comprises adjusting a position of the view port on the image responsive to the center point.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
A method as recited in claim 2, wherein step a. comprises designating a zoom operation and step b. comprises adjusting a size of the view port on the image responsive to a predetermined zoom factor.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method as recited in claim 1, wherein step a. comprises touching a display screen.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as recited in claim 1, wherein step c. comprises subsampling the image responsive to relative sizes of the window and the view port.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method as recited in claim 1, where the window is smaller than the display.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 210 words
A method of applying a function to an image, comprising: a. scanning a photograph to capture the image thereon; b. subsampling the captured image based on a variable size view port positioned on the image to produce a first subsampled image and displaying the first subsampled image as defined by the view port with the subsampled image filling a fixed size display window on and smaller than a touch screen display; c. allowing an operator to touch the image in the window to indicate a location of an artifact; d. adjusting a size of the view port by a predetermined amount and adjusting a position of the view port responsive to the touch indication; e. sampling the image within the adjusted size and position view port to produce a second subsampled image and displaying the second subsampled image filling the window; f. repeatedly performing steps c-e as initiated by the operator; g. applying the function to correct an artifact in the image and only to a portion of the image designated by the adjusted size and position view port and visible in the window; h. allowing the operator to initiate performance of steps a-e to view an effect of the function relative to the image; and i. printing the image.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 86 words
An apparatus, comprising: a touch screen display including a fixed pixel size window displaying a portion of an image and which a user touches indicating a region to which a function is to be applied; and a computer, connected to the display, storing the image and having a variable size view port of the image corresponding to the window, and the function being applied to a portion of the image defined by the view port and visible in the window as indicated by the user touch.
