Claim 1
Independent Claim
126 words
A bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis, comprising: a stent member having a generally cylindrical external surface and a generally cylindrical internal surface, said stent member being expandable from a first diameter at which it can be inserted into a human or animal body pathway and a second diameter greater than said first diameter; and a polymeric material tubular graft member associated with at least one of said generally cylindrical external and internal surfaces of said stent member, said graft member has a first stable configuration when said stent member is at said first diameter and assumes a second stable configuration when said stent member is at said second expanded diameter, said second stable configuration of the graft member being one at which the polymeric material is stretched.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein said tubular graft member is made from a polymeric material selected from the group consisting essentially of polyester terephthalate, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyamide, polyurethane, polycarbonate polyurethane, poly(methylpentane), polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinylchloride and combinations thereof.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
25 words
The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis as defined in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said polymeric material has a Durometer hardness of 75D or harder.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
26 words
The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein said polymeric material is a polycarbonate polyurethane having a Durometer hardness of 75D or harder.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
26 words
The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis as defined in any of claims 1-4, wherein said tubular graft member is made of woven, non-woven, knitted or film materials.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
73 words
The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis as defined in any of claims 1-5 wherein said graft member and said stent member are capable of being expanded from said first diameter to said second diameter by the application of radially directed pressure from within said stent member, said graft member being constructed to surpass the elastic yield point of said polymeric material without substantial weakening of said graft member when expanded to said second diameter.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
37 words
The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis as defined in any of claims 1-6, wherein said graft member and said stent member are dimensioned for placement over a balloon of a catheter for insertion into a living body pathway.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
28 words
The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis as defined in any of claims 1-7, wherein said polymeric material is substantially unstressed when at both said first and second stable configurations.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
91 words
The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis as defined in any of claims 1-5, 7 or 8, wherein said tubular graft member is secured to at least one of said generally cylindrical external and internal surfaces of said stent member, said polymeric material is orientable, and said graft member is constructed to surpass the elastic yield point of said orientable polymeric material so as to impart a non-elastomeric state to the graft member thereby avoiding substantially weakening said graft member when expanded to said second cross-sectional diameter and implanted for extended time periods.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
41 words
The bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis of any of claims 1-9, wherein said stent member includes a plurality of generally circumferential adjacent sections and wherein each said section includes at least one expandable segment which imparts radial expandability to said circumferential section.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
122 words
A method for the manufacture of a bistable luminal graft endoprosthesis, comprising the steps of: supplying a stent member having a generally cylindrical external surface and a generally cylindrical internal surface and capable of being expanded from a first cross-sectional diameter to a second, expanded cross-sectional diameter greater than said first cross-sectional diameter; preparing a tubular graft member from a polymeric material, the tubular graft member having a first stable configuration when the graft member has the first cross-sectional diameter, and said tubular graft member has a second stable configuration when the graft member has the second, expanded cross-sectional diameter; and applying said tubular graft member to at least one of said generally cylindrical external and internal surfaces of said stent member.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
33 words
The method as defined in claim 11 wherein said preparing step includes selecting the polymeric material and tubular graft member to be substantially unstressed when at both said first and second stable configurations.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
49 words
The method as defined in claim 11 or 12, wherein said preparing step includes constructing the graft member of an orientable material to surpass the elastic yield point of said orientable material without substantially weakening said graft member when said graft member is expanded to said second cross-sectional diameter.
Claim 14
Independent Claim
52 words
The method as defined in any of claims 11-13, wherein said preparing step includes initially stretching the polymeric material of the tubular graft member to surpass the elastic yield point of the polymeric material, and said applying step includes heat collapsing said graft member over said cylindrical surface of said stent member.
Claim 15
Independent Claim
